It's been a good few weeks in regards to the release of sporting variants of popular Japanese cars, with NISMO being reintroduced, and now the introduction of a Toyota GT86 TRD in the UK.

With the standard GT86 making it's debut appearance on Top Gear last night, it seems the perfect time to write about what is currently the most exciting vehicle emerging from Japan.

As a huge Toyota fan the introduction of another TRD model variant is great news. Toyota Racing Development (TRD for short) signifies the in-house tuning arm of Toyota themselves, and historically TRD have been responsible for some truly awesome modifications to existing road-going vehicles.

A particular favourite of mine has always been the TRD2000GT, the TRD equivalent of the SW20 MR2. With radical styling improvements over the original MR2, and a whole host of optional power and aesthetic upgrades - the TRD2000GT really is what every MR2 owner covets, myself included.

It looks like Toyota Racing Development have taken a more reserved approach when modifying the GT86 TRD, with modifications seemingly limited to 18in 'TF6' alloy wheels, more aggressive bumpers front and rear, a diffuser and a new quad-tailpipe exhaust. TRD branding can also be found on the fuel filler cap and gear lever.

When the news broke that there would be GT86 TRD I have to admit that I was expecting more from them. Yes the lack of upgrades, particularly in the engine department, are slightly disappointing from my perspective, but I'm still glad that the TRD name will live on with a new generation of Toyota vehicles.

On sale next month (March 2013) with the manual costing £31,495 and the automatic £32,995, only 250 TRD tweaked vehicles will be made.

Potentially a future classic...?
